ROAD DEATH CLAIMS· Over a quarter of all accidental death claims were as a result of Road Traffic Accidents – Irish Life Claims Survey Reveals· The majority of road traffic accident death claims were male · Alcohol a factor in 1 in 6 accidental or sudden deaths Over a quarter (27%) of all accidental death claims paid out by Irish Life in 2009 were as a result of road traffic accidents new statistics published by Irish Life reveal. A total of €5 million was paid out to families or dependants as a result of road traffic accidents. The majority (83%) of all road traffic accident deaths were male. Alcohol was a factor in 1 in 6 accidental or sudden deaths claims, the majority of which were road traffic accident related. While the average duration of plans before death was 13 years, some significant death benefits were paid in respect of people whose life cover had only been in force for a matter of days and months. For example, €200,000 was paid out to the dependents of a man in his early twenties after a road traffic accident whose cover was in force for a duration of only 5 months. Commenting on the findings Martin Duffy, Head of Claims at Irish Life said, “Our statistics show that a large amount of our claims last year were because of deaths on our roads. While no-one likes to think about these things when we get behind the wheel it is very important that anyone who does a significant amount of driving has adequate life cover in place for their families should the unexpected occur.” Its a scary fact and one that is irresponsible to ignore - all drivers should be aware that the accident does not always happen to someone else. |
