MIGHTY MERC By Brian Foley

The Mighty Merc is the the latest and greatest Mercedes-Benz M-Class, undoubtedly one of the world's best 4x4 SUV's with typical Mercedes luxury for road driving comfort plus outstanding ability to maintain forward motion in the toughest of off road terrain from mud holes to rocky mountain climbs.

The ML250 comes with all mod cons including leather upholstery, fully power-adjustable and heated front seats, ambient lighting and Thermatic automatic air conditioning. Also standard are Media Interface, LED daytime running lights, and high tec safety systems such as Attention Assist and a Pre-Safe system.

The ML250 recently test driven looked most impressive with the AMG exterior Sports Pack to further emphasise the power statement. The test model was an ML 250BlueTEC 4MATIC, with 2143cc diesel engine rated with a power output of 150Kw at 4200rpm and 500Nm of torque at 1600/1800rpm, and 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission. Performance is surprisingly sporty, top speed 210km/h, 0-100km/h in 9.0 seconds. Cruising all day at the legal limit is an absolute doddle, whilst in town the ML250 is easy to drive and park, despite its size. The torquey engine makes light work of towing, and its off road performance is actually awesome.

CO2 emissions are 158:170 g/km. Fuel consumption (manufacturer's figures) : 6.0-6.5 l/100km.

How much? As expected, the M-Class is 'Euro-Expensive' with pre-budget prices ranging from €71,060 to €85,220 (plus delivery). Well, we won't be buying the M-Class, but thanks a million to Motor Distributors for the experience and a week's enjoyable driving over the short and the long hau!
