BMW 5 Series - Best Selling Executive Car By Brian Foley

The BMW 5 Series is Ireland's best selling executive car, which duals as a spacious and comfortable family car for motorists who can afford to go the extra for all the prestige, quality and driving dynamics that automatically comes as standard with the premium German brand. In this year's January-August registrations figures, the BMW 5 Series was placed 14th overall with 1,594 models registered, compared to the Audi A6 with 922 regs., Audi A4 with 903, Mercedes-Benz E-Class with 899 and the Audi A5 with 288. The July 2012 issue of 'Irish Tatler Man' rated the BMW 5 Series as 'Best Premium Class Family Car'. The 5 Series has classic lines with its timeless styling devoid of gimmicks and avoiding the current trend of scvulptured sides and doors. Interior space and comfort are matched by relaxing road and travel comfort, and effortless long distance cruising. The 520d ED recently test driven proved very quiet and refined, with lots of performance, 0 to 100km/h in 8.2 seconds, plus renowned diesel economy. As the test week was in generally dry conditions, any hint of the driven rear wheels to spin or break traction was not experienced, but this could be a problem on icy and/or snow covered roads - which thankfully we don't get that much or or often in Ireland. All is never perfect and a couple of niggling compaints concerned the narrow door pockets, no provision for loose objects such as mobile 'phone, keys, water bottle etc. between the front seats apart from a not very convenient closed hold-all, and annoying reflection of dash moulding on the windscreen. The 520d ED on test was listed at €45,281.58 ith all options including €942.94 for Imprial Blux Xirallic paint -bringing the price up from €42,880.
