NEW TOYOTA LAND CRUISER MULTI-PURPOSE SUV By Brian Foley

The Toyota Land Cruiser celebrates a notable 60th Birthday this year. Notable is indeed very appropriate as the mighty Land Cruiser is worldwide recognised as one of the strongest, toughest, most versatile and multi-purpose 4x4 vehicles for serious off-road work, also towing, plus smooth on-road performance with excellent ride comfort . The latest version of the Toyota Land Cruiser comes in short and long wheelbase models, in GX Passenger and Premium, and GL and GX Commercials. With such a large and purposeful SUV, functionality wins priority over styling considerations and whilst the Land Cruiser is not a style statement, its sheer size makes it an impressive machine. The basic shape and size remains the same, with various front and rear external updates including new front bumper and fog lights, new front grille and lights, plus some more subtle rear styling changes. The interior also get a fresh new look.

For all its size, the Land Cruiser is easy to drive on all roads, but not so much for parking and its best to avoid narrow streets

The new Land Cruiser is Euro5 compliant and fitted with a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) as standard.

The 3.0 litre D-4D (190) engine now has increased power of 10% and torque of 2.5%.

Previous Land Cruiser 120    New Land Cruiser 150
Power HP (kW)    173 (127)/3400    190 (140) / 3400 +10%
Torque (Nm)    410 / 1600-2600    420 / 1600-3000 +2.5%

CO² emissions have been reduced from 243g/km to a top class 213 g/km (5-door, A/T) and it returns 8.1 l/100 km (34.8mpg) (5-door, A/T) in the combined cycle. This results in the Land Cruiser passenger dropping a TAX band from G to F with road tax at €1050pa.

The 3.0 litre D-4D engine is mated to a compact, lightweight 6-speed manual transmission. The optional 5-speed sequential automatic transmission features manual override, Flex Lock-up Control, Artificial Intelligence (AI)-SHIFT Control and an Eco Driving indicator. Automatic versions of the new Land Cruiser also benefit from an Eco Driving Indicator to help drivers use the accelerator in the most fuel efficient manner. Under Eco driving, the Eco Driving Indicator light will illuminate, while the Eco Driving Indicator Display shows accelerator operation within the most environmentally-friendly zone. When the use of the accelerator exceeds this zone, the Eco light goes out, and the right hand side of the display begins to flash.

Brake assist automatically supports emergency braking if the brakes are applied quickly, but without sufficient pressure on the pedal. It does this by measuring how fast the brake pedal is depressed and then, if appropriate, increasing braking force. When pressure on the pedal is eased, BA similarly reduces the amount of assistance.

The Land Cruiser is equipped with no less than 7 SRS airbags; a driver’s dual-stage front airbag, a new driver’s knee airbag, a passenger front airbag and front side airbags, as well as two full-length side curtain* airbags which now provide head protection to occupants of both two and three seating row models in the case of side impacts

*Passenger models only

Cruise control is also standard across the model range.

Phone and hands free / Bluetooth® is now standard across the model range allowing users to enjoy safe communications using any compatible mobile phone.
