OPEL CLASSIC WORKSHOP By Brian Foley

An absolute treasure throve of Opel models of yesteryear is to be found in a totally inconspicious building in the Opel HQ at Russelsheim, near the German industrial city of Frankfurt. By comparison with the many clinical modern museum buildings with their bright lights and highly polished floors, the cars on view in the Opel Classic Workshop are more in their natural habitat in a quaintly old fashioned two-storey building with clean but oil and tyre stained floors to add to the nostalgic atmosphere. The Opel tradition in Irish rallying covers many Opel Manta and Ascona successes scored by such legends as Jimmy McRae, Billy Coleman, Austin MacHale and the late Bertie Fisher. It is a bit sad that not one of these cars had made it to the Opel Classic Workshop, but there are many rally and racing saloons on view for the enthusiasts to view and for the oldtimers to recall.
